It has been a very active term here at the school. The students are enjoying being physically active through their gym classes, intramurals, extra curricular sports and special events.

The primary classes have continued to work on moving safely in the gym. We have been playing lead-up games for a variety of different sports and are developing a sense of fair play. We are learning to use a variety of equipment . Our elementary friends have been playing basketball lead-up games, participating in fitness challenges and enjoying a variety of low organized games that emphasize movement in sport. As well, they are developing the concept of team play. Our older students have been playing basketball and  playing both singles and doubles badminton. As the spring starts to warm up and the field dries out, we will be heading out to enjoy some of our physical education classes outside.

Catholic Schools Week was a great success from an active lifestyle perspective. Students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that they can continue to enjoy through out their lives, including skating, bowling and swimming.

Basketball season has  just finished up. We had three teams on the go. Thank you to Madame Curwain and Mrs. Ireland for all of the time dedicated to the teams. I am sure the teams appreciate it.

As things quiet down on the  basketball front, badminton is on the horizon. The grade seven and eight students will have the opportunity to participate in badminton club and compete in the MCSAA badminton tournaments at the beginning of May.

Running club will be starting up after spring break. Runners from grade 3 and up are welcome to meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and head out  onto the sidewalks for a run. If the weather is unsuitable we will meet in the gym and enjoy a combination of running and active games to maintain our cardiovascular endurance.  Permission forms will be going home next week.  Students  below grade three are welcome to join if a parent is available to run with them.

The students have been enjoying lunch hour activities in the gym. Thank you to Mrs. Pieczonka and the Student Leadership team for organizing  and running intramurals.

That's all for now. If you have any questions or concerns about the Physical Education program, please come by the gym or call me at the school.

 Take care and stay active!

Fall 2023

The fall has been a  very busy time in the gym.  All the classes are settled into our routines and are enjoying being physically active.

The primary classes have been working on moving safely in the gym. We have been playing cooperative games  and are developing a sense of fair play. We are learning to use a variety of equipment  and have been concentrating on throwing and catching activities. Our elementary friends have been playing volleyball lead-up games, participating in fitness challenges and enjoying a variety of low organized games. Our older students have been playing volleyball, working to assess and improve their fitness level and  participating in different games and activities.

Our  annual Terry Fox Family Walk was held on Thursday, September 14th.   It was a great day and everyone enjoyed the pizza after the walk was finished. Thank you to everyone who participated and a special thanks to those who donated to this worthy cause.

We had an interesting week of fun hosting the Rovers Field Hockey Club. Thank you to Thomas and Diya Jacob for coming out and teaching us about this sport.

Volleyball season just finished up. We had five teams on the go (two boys teams and three girls teams) with more than 50 student athletes involved. Through the season the players participated in a number of  tournaments (including  two hosted at our school) and over 40 league games. Our developmental girls teams  concluded their season with a tournament on  November 18th, with the boys wrapping things up on Friday December 1st.  and 18th . Both teams had a remarkable season.  We had playoffs for our grade 7/8 teams during the week of November 20th –25th. Thank you to everyone who came out to cheer our teams on.   Thank you to   Mrs. McInnis, Mrs. Rayner,  Mrs. Seaman,  Mr. Klassen, Madame Curwain and Mrs. Ireland for all of the time dedicated to coaching the  teams. As well, thanks to Mr. Beilman, Santi Galapon and Sebastian Pieczonka who refereed through the season. I am sure the athletes  appreciate it; I know I do!

Our next inter-school sport is basketball. That's all for now. If you have any questions or concerns about the Physical Education program, please come by the gym or call me at the school. Take care and stay active!

June 2023

It has been another fine year down in the gym. Through the course of the year, we have had a variety of programs both in the school and inter-school that have provided students with opportunities to be active and enjoy a healthy level of competition. Students have developed a strong sense of fair play and sportspersonship, while improving their fitness and skill levels.

Our inter-school sports program continues to thrive. In the fall, the gym was hopping with five volleyball teams on the go. After Christmas, basketball took over. Our teams dribbled, passed and shot their way through the season and had a lot of fun on the way. Badminton club was well attended and the students’ skills improved greatly over the course of the season. A large number of students participated in the after school club. The top finishers had the opportunity to participate in the MCSAA tournament at the end of April. Students in grades 4-8 had the opportunity to participate in the Knights of Columbus Track and Field Meets held in June at the University of Manitoba. Our athletes represented our school well and many earned personal bests.

Our final sports club of the year was Running Club. More than 40 students registered and attended the club over the spring, every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Thank you to Mrs. Seaman, Mrs. Ireland and Mrs. McInnis who joined us in lacing up their running shoes.

It takes a team of dedicated staff and parents to provide these experiences for our children. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped out this year through coaching, supervising and supporting our students. Looking forward to the fall, we will be starting volleyball for the upper grades early in September. If you are interested in helping with our teams, if you have an idea for a great extracurricular club or if you have any questions about our programs, please do not hesitate to stop by the gym. I’d be happy to speak with you. Stay fit this summer!
